An Apple a Day....

…keeps the doctor away. The first printed mention of this saying can be found in the February 1866 issue of the publication "Notes and Queries." The publication printed the proverb like this: "Eat an apple on going to bed, and you'll keep the doctor from earning his bread." Nearly 150 years later, variations of this adage are still quoted. It's unlikely that the saying would have maintained such popularity if there wasn't some truth to it, right? Apples – and all fruits, vegetables, and whole foods, for that matter – provide the essential nutrients that we need on a daily basis to thrive.

While we should always strive to maintain a good diet, in today’s chaotic world, many of us rely on fast and processed foods and a not-so-well-balanced diet. Therefore, not surprisingly, we do not get the daily recommended allowance of vitamins and minerals that are required for optimal health and wellness.  As a result, nutritional gaps are common among the general population1.  Additionally, there are life stages that require more of certain micronutrients than the average diet offers (i.e., folic acid during pregnancy and vitamin B12 in the elderly population)2.  Multivitamin and mineral formulas help to bridge these nutrient gaps in daily diets and can provide benefits to the whole body. It has even been recommended by the US Department of Agriculture and US Department of Health and Human Services, in the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, that “in certain cases, fortified foods and dietary supplements may be useful in providing one or more nutrients that otherwise might be consumed in less than recommended amounts.3
